Today, you will learn a little bit more about the cost of counseling and therapy through your health insurance plan. When considering how much mental health services should cost, the cost should be similar to that of physical therapy services. You should note that the cost will vary depending on the specifics of your plan, but the easiest way to get a more definite answer on what exactly you can expect to pay is by calling the phone number on the back of your health insurance card. Any medical service you received is assigned what is called a “CPT Code”. A CPT Code is what the insurance company uses to determine how much to pay your provider, and how much you will owe for your service. The most common and important CPT codes to know when billing for mental health services are;

  • 90834

  • 90837

  • 90847

  • 90791

When you call your health insurance company with the number located on the back of your card, have these CPT codes handy as a reference. Ask the representative if they can provide you with a cost estimate for the above CPT codes. It is not essential to have the CPT codes memorized, but it does help the representative get a more accurate representation of your cost for care. In lieu of providing them with CPT codes, you could simply ask for information about the services you are looking to receive.
